These beautiful waterfalls are definitely on the list as one of the most impressive waterfalls in Costa Rica. The Nauyaca waterfalls are a total of 65 meters in height and are comprised of two sets of waterfalls, the taller falls that form the base are 45 meters high and the smaller, tiered falls above, are 20 meters in height.
There are natural pools for swimming and for the more adventurous travelers there is a tarzan rope on the smaller tiered falls that one can climb. Always exercise caution, as the rocks are slippery when wet.
How to get there?
The entrance to Nauyaca waterfalls is located between the small towns of Baru and Plantanillo on the 243 road that goes from the Costanera Sur highway and leads to San Isidro El General. The trail that leads to the waterfall is 7km and is an uphill walk to get to the waterfalls through a maintained trail. The walk can be done at a leisurely pace and suits all fitness levels. By far its a great way to see the country side of the area. Be sure to head out early as the walk to the waterfalls is best done before the midday sun hits. During rainy season the trails can be fairly muddy, but well worth it as the falls are even more impressive when there has been rainfall. Bring a picnic and swimsuit to enjoy a leisurely moment and the natural view.
If you are looking for a tour, one of the best tours I have been on in the area is Don Lulo’s. Additionally, with the tour you receive breakfast, lunch, horseback riding and the waterfall scenic tour. The horses are well trained for any level and the groups are normally always fun loving! It’s a highly recommend tour and it should definitely be on the bucket list of activities for anyone visiting the area. Really an excellent tour that offers a great value for a great price.
So if you are in the area, or looking to visit the best waterfall in Costa Rica, take a hike or took a tour to visit Nauyaca. You won’t regret it.
